Grain Free Cat Food

The health of your cat is crucial so is its nutrition. Therefore it is strongly advised that before you purchase any food for your pet, you must read the label on them. This will give you vital information about the food and also you can be able to tell whether the foods are genuine or contain outrageous claims just to attract you.

Pets usually do not choose what is best for them and hence would consume anything you give them as food. Therefore it is your role to ensure that whatever you give to your cat is for the greater good and will not bring harm to their health.  It’s up to you to determine what best suits your cat's health as you spend more time with them. It’s highly advised that you consider foods that have already been tested and found to be nutritionally adequate for your kitty. Observing your pets will always tell you whether the food is right or wrong and formed stools that are not frequent nor too much would be a good indicator of an appropriate diet.

Your pet's coat should have a rich color and be well moisturized. Also, your pet should not be over or underweight, have good energy and healthy muscles. In case you observe intermittent vomiting, loose stools or picky appetite it’s very important to change your pet’s diet.

Types of Grain-Free Cat Food

There are several ways to get quality grain free cat food in your beloved pet's diet. Here are some of these meal types:

- Kibble cat food - this is a very convenient cat food that is also readily available in local pet food stores.
- Grain-free foods are also available in frozen portions which would require the addition of water to them before being fed to cats. The freezing is done to preserve nutrients and minerals for longer periods.
- Natural feeds are also available in frozen states which are healthy.

For cats, the grain foods and their derivatives would not be advisable. Why?

- Most cats naturally consume lots of meat-based proteins with little amounts of fruit and vegetables and carbohydrates. The grain food contains lots of carbohydrates which are unfamiliar to the cats’ digestive system. This would, therefore, mean that the cats’ pancreas would be forced to secrete a lot of enzymes for their digestion. Over secretion of this enzyme, in turn, causes the cat fall sick.
 - Besides the numerous health benefits, grain food has also been found to cause health problems like kidney diseases, obesity, and a horde of chronic digestive problems which include vomiting, diarrhea, constipation and inflammatory bowel diseases.
- Also, continuous consumption of grains by cats increases their chances of contracting heart diseases, because over dependence on carbohydrates cause’s cats to develop ‘taurine’ deficiency.
- Grains have a low moisture content that is most likely expected to cause dehydration in cats in the event they do not consume large quantities of water.
- Increased weight can also be a problem when feeding grain foods to your cat. Old cats are more prone to this condition given that they rarely move around.
- Grain foods have also been found to invite some allergies and diseases as they lower your pets’ immune system.

This shows us that cats have not evolved to eat cereal grains as their gastrointestinal system is relatively short making it only efficient for protein metabolism and not carbohydrates. Cats ability to secrete carbohydrate digestive enzymes is also limited.
